Where is Parksley Virginia?

It is located in Accomac County, and located in the upper half of ESVA. From here, you’re a 30-minute drive from Chincoteague Island to the north. To the south, Onancock is just over 10 minutes away, and Cape Charles is a 50-minute ride.

If you are traveling from outside the Eastern Shore of Virginia, Parksley is a 30-minute drive to the MD/VA state line to the north. From Virginia Beach, VA, it will take you 1.5 hours of driving to reach town, and a 3-hour ride if you are coming from Washington, D.C.

If you’re coming from the north:

  1. Take US Route 13 South (also known as the Ocean Highway). Continue heading south until you see signs for Parksley, which is about 20 miles from the MD/VA state line.
  2. Turn right onto VA-176 West (also known as Parksley Road) and continue for about 5 miles which will take you directly to the downtown area.

From the South:

  1. Continue on US Route 13 North (Ocean Highway) until you see signs for Parksley. The town of Parksley is 44 miles from Cheriton, and 9 miles from Onley.
  2. Turn left at the traffic light onto VA-176 (Parksley Road). You should see a Royal Farms convenience store there as well. Continue for about 5 miles until you reach Parksley.

This beautiful sanctuary was established back in 1984 to safeguard precious migratory birds and other wildlife. When you arrive, you’ll be amazed by the mix of marshes, forests, and sandy shores, all teeming with life.

During your visit, you’ll have the chance to spot some amazing creatures like bald eagles, foxes, and even the endangered Delmarva Peninsula fox squirrel! So, grab your binoculars and hiking shoes, and come experience the great outdoors at its finest!

Walking the trails at the Mutton Hunk Fen Natural Area Preserve

Mutton Hunk Fen Natural Area Preserve is a special place located in Accomack County, Virginia, near Gargathy Bay. It is home to a rare type of wetland called a sea-level fen, which has a unique mix of plants that can handle both acidic soil and low nutrients.

This area is important because it has five rare plant species that need protection. The preserve used to have 220 acres of farmland, but it has been turned into a habitat for migratory songbirds.

The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, The Nature Conservancy, and the Virginia Eastern Shore Land Trust all work together to protect this area.

Visitors can enjoy the preserve by using the parking lot and two walking trails, but they should be careful to follow the rules and not disturb the plants and animals that live there.

The weather is influenced by its unique position between the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. This coastal location allows residents to experience mild climates throughout much of the year.

Summers here are warm and sunny, with temperatures in the 70s-80s°F. The ocean breeze keeps things comfortable even on the hottest days.

During fall, the coastal influence brings crisp air, with temperatures from the upper 50s to low 70s°F.

Winters are relatively mild as temperatures stay in the 30s-40s°F, and snowfall is light, averaging around 2-5 inches per year.

Finally, as we roll into Spring the area comes alive with blooming flowers and mild temperatures ranging from the upper 50s to low 70s°F.
