History
Willis Wharf has a fascinating history that dates back to the 17th century. The village was originally known as “Mill Dam,” named after a mill that was built on Parting Creek.
Later, this community was known as Bigelow’s Wharf and Downing’s Wharf, it was renamed Willis Wharf in the 1850s when E. L. Willis bought land and established a general store. Once a principal port for grain and potato shipments, the village transitioned to a seafood industry leader in the late 1800s after the railroad took over the shipping business.
Within Willis Wharf, remnants of another community can be found. Several houses on Little Hog Island Lane were moved from Hog Island in the 1930s due to repeated hurricanes and storms causing erosion and shifting sands. The residents decided to relocate their homes and cemeteries to the mainland, and today, Hog Island is part of the Nature Conservancy’s Virginia Coast Reserve.
Over the years, the town has evolved, with modern-day Willis Wharf being a hub for aquaculture and eco-tourism.
