Saxis Island’s rich history is based on its role as a transportation route and its abundance of shellfish and game. Captain John Smith documented Saxis in 1608 during an exploratory voyage of the Chesapeake Bay region. European settlers arrived in 1661, dividing the island into two sections: “Sikes’s Island” to the north and “St. George’s Island” to the south.

By 1860, Saxis Island had a population of 169 residents. During the Civil War, it became a hub for smuggling supplies between Union-controlled Maryland and Confederate Virginia. Union forces eventually occupied the Eastern Shore, but Saxis-based vessels reportedly continued to run blockades.

The local economy thrived on fishing and oyster dredging since the 1860s, with the extension of the Pennsylvania Railroad to nearby Crisfield, Maryland, in 1866, further fueling the growth of the oyster industry.

In the early 20th century, steamers like “Maggie” and “The Eastern Shore” transported Saxis’ seafood products to northern cities and brought visitors to the island.

Today, Saxis remains a charming town, known for its fascinating history, scenic landscapes, and abundant natural resources. Visitors can explore the island’s rich past at the local maritime museum, engage in outdoor activities, and indulge in the delicious local seafood.
