Early days

The town of Melfa, Virginia, has a rich history that dates back to the colonial era. It is situated in Accomack County, one of the oldest counties in the United States.

Accomack County was established in 1634 and was initially known as Accomac Shire. It was renamed Northampton County in 1642 and later divided to form the present-day Accomack County in 1663.

The early settlers of the area were primarily English and chose the Eastern Shore for farming, fishing, and trading. As the region developed, small communities like Melfa began to emerge.

Though the exact founding date remains unclear, the town’s growth can be traced back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The arrival of the railroad

The arrival of the railroad in the early 1900s played a pivotal role in all towns on the Shore, including Melfa.

The railroad allowed Melfa to connect to major cities with the transportation of agricultural goods. The region’s economy was heavily dependent on agriculture, particularly the production of potatoes and other crops.

As Melfa continued to grow, schools, churches, and businesses were created. The Eastern Shore Community College, which was founded in 1971, has played a significant role in Melfa’s history.

Modern-day

As a member of the Virginia Community College System, it has provided countless opportunities for higher education locally and has been instrumental in the development of the local workforce.

The Melfa Airport, officially known as Accomack County Airport (MFV), has played a significant role in the town’s development and the broader region. With its convenient location near Melfa, the airport has made the town and the Eastern Shore of Virginia more accessible to both domestic and international visitors.

The airport has been important for the local economy, helping to transport goods, services, and people in the region. This has helped local businesses grow and attracted investors, boosting the area’s economic growth.

Today, Melfa keeps its small-town feel while embracing modern life. Its mix of history and current features attracts visitors, who can experience both the past and present.
