History

Exmore’s historical roots date back to the late 1600s. Englishman John Cobb received a land grant of six hundred acres in the area.

The town was originally farmland for over two hundred years. When the railroad arrived in 1884 it transformed the area into a center for commerce and tourism.

The railroad brought prosperity to the Eastern Shore’s abundant produce as well as the area’s tourism industry.

Exmore’s first post office was established in 1884 and required the town to be named. The town’s name came from the town of Exmoor in England, but there is a debate over how the town was named.

The arrival of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel in 1964 caused a stall in Exmore’s economic growth.

In recent years the town has been experiencing a renaissance. New businesses have been opening downtown and along the Route 13 highway.
