Are There Beach Umbrella Stands on Chincoteague Beach?

No. Beach umbrella stands on Chincoteague Beach are not permitted. Since the beach is part of the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, commercial entities are not allowed. So no umbrella or chair stands. However, there are several beach shops along the way to the refuge that carry all the beach supplies you need.

Where Are The Best Places to Buy Beach Supplies on Chincoteague Island?

If you are searching for where to buy beach umbrellas, there are plenty of places to buy beach supplies on the Island. Here are a few I would recommend:

  • Chincoteague Beachwear is located on Maddox Blvd (or beach road as everyone calls it). It’s the first beach shop you’ll see on your way to the beach. It will be on your left-hand side. They have all your beach needs. Sun Scooters is right next to them with a good selection of bike and scooter rentals as well
  • Sunsations is just across the street from Chincoteague Beachwear. They sell a large selection of Chincoteague branded merchandise at discounted prices, as well as beach supplies.
  • Tom’s Beach Supply is located next to Famous Pizza and Sub Shop. It is smaller than the previous beach stores, with similar products. It’s a convenient stop if you’re picking up food next door.
  • Atlantic Shoals Surf Shop is the best surf shop in town! They have a great selection of top-quality clothes and supplies. From beach chairs to bikinis, plus much more.

Can I Rent a Beach Umbrella on Chincoteague Island?

Absolutely. If you only go to the beach once or twice a year, it may make sense to rent a beach umbrella. It will save you from packing it on your already crowded vehicle, plus it will save you money.

I suggest Chincoteague Island Outfitters. They have a great selection of portable beach umbrella rentals and other supplies for your outing. They are located just a few blocks off of Maddox Blvd.

Tips for Setting up and Using a Beach Umbrella

Here are several tips for setting up and using a beach umbrella, with each tip followed by a brief explanation:

Select the Right Umbrella

Beach umbrellas should be strong enough to withstand harsh beach elements like sun, sand, and wind. They usually have a larger canopy, long poles, and sand anchors for added stability. When selecting one, consider factors such as size, UV protection level, and wind resistance features.

Inspect the Conditions

Before setting up your beach umbrella with sand anchors, observe the weather and wind direction. This is crucial because strong winds can turn your umbrella into a dangerous projectile. Make sure to set up your umbrella in a way that reduces its wind resistance by angling it against the wind direction.

Dig a Deep Hole

The key to a stable beach umbrella setup is properly anchoring it into the sand. Start by digging a deep hole where you plan to set up. The hole should be approximately one to two feet deep depending on the size of your umbrella, to ensure it’s securely embedded.

Secure the Umbrella

When the hole is ready, insert the umbrella pole. Make sure it’s tight and well-fitted. Wiggle the pole to compact the sand around it to add stability. Once it’s secure, fill the hole with the excavated sand and compact it again.

Angle and Tilt for Optimal Shade

To get the best shade and protection from the sun, angle and tilt your umbrella based on the sun’s position. This will require you to adjust the umbrella’s position a few times during the day as the sun moves across the sky.

Ensure Safety

Always keep an eye on your umbrella, especially during breezy conditions. If the wind becomes too strong, it is safer to take the umbrella down.

Pack Up Properly

When it’s time to pack up, do it safely. Pull out the umbrella straight up without yanking it sideways to avoid damaging the pole or the anchor. Fold it carefully to extend its lifespan.

Features to Look For In a Beach Umbrella

When buying a beach umbrella, here are 3 important features I always look for:

UV Protection

It kind of goes with saying, that a beach umbrella needs to protect you from the sun. It’s important that it offers adequate protection from harmful UV rays, in addition to shade. Look for beach umbrellas with a high UPF rating (Ultraviolet Protection Factor), which measures the amount of UV radiation that can penetrate the fabric.

Durability and Wind Resistance

Whether you plan to purchase a beach umbrella Walmart sells or a higher-end Tommy Bahama beach umbrella, it needs to withstand harsh beach elements. This includes wind as well as salt and sea spray.

Go with durable materials like fiberglass, aluminum, and high-quality fabric that will last you for several seasons.

What Is the Best Beach Umbrella for Wind?

One of the best beach umbrellas for windy conditions that I have used is the BEACHBUB. It is rated to be able to handle winds over 40 mph and very lightweight. It also has a UPF rating of 50+. The umbrella is sold as part of a kit that includes a towel hook, carrying case, shovel, sandbags, and a sand gopher.

I personally don’t like to stay on the beach when it is windy. However, when I know there is a good chance of windy conditions, this is the umbrella I pack.
