Where is Accomac VA?

Accomac, VA is a delightful little town located on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. It resides in Accomack County, a region known for its rich history and natural beauty.

If you look at this Eastern Shore VA map, it is roughly halfway between the Chesapeake Bay to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the east.

Accomac is a short drive (3 miles) from Onley, and just 30 minutes south of Chincoteague Island.

How to get there

This quaint town is situated in the heart of Accomack County. Whether you’re coming from the north or the south, getting to Accomac is a breeze. Here’s all you need to know to make your travels even easier.

If you’re heading to Accomac from the south, you’ll want to hop on U.S. Route 13, also known as the Lankford Highway. This is the only major highway on the Shore. As you travel north, you’ll be paralleling the railroad tracks to your left, and passing several convenience stores and antique shops.

Once you reach the town of Tasley, you will want to start looking for Business Route 13 (also called Front Street) on your right. At the traffic light, turn right and continue on this road until you reach Accomac. You will drive less than 1/2 mile before reaching your destination.

For those of you traveling from the north, U.S. Route 13 is still your go-to highway. If you are traveling through Maryland, Accomac is approximately 28 miles south. Look for signs for Business Rt 13 (Front Street). It will be on your left. When you make your turn, you will be crossing the northbound lanes for Rt 13. Follow this road until see several courthouses.

Accomac has a fascinating history that goes all the way back to the early days of colonial America. As part of Accomack County, one of the first eight shires in Virginia. This area experienced religious diversity with the arrival of missionaries like Francis Makemie and Elijah Baker.

It was also during this time the county court made its permanent home here in the 1690s. Over time, the town grew economically. Many of the historical buildings still standing today were built during this time.

During the Civil War, the Union Army occupied the region, In 1893, the town was officially renamed Accomac. Today, it remains a charming destination and attracts many history buffs throughout the year.
